About the Scheme

Cust Hall Bridge is located on Gainsford End Road, Toppesfield, Braintree and carries a two way, single road over a tributary of the River Colne.

Engineers are currently considering options available to strengthen the bridge as the brick arch of the structure has been identified as being in a weakened condition.

To support these activities, on site surveys will be required to help inform design proposals which, subject to funding and approvals, will be planned as part of a separate phase of planning and construction work.  This is currently anticipated for the 2020/21 financial year.  The length of this process can vary from scheme to scheme and can be influenced by a number of factors. Dates are therefore indicative and may be subject to change.

We will work closely with the stakeholders throughout this process to progress this work and will provide updates on this webpage.

On site investigations

Initial trial hole investigations are scheduled to take place from Monday 30 September to Friday 4 October (inclusive).  These works will include carriageway excavations which require Gainsford End Road to be fully closed at the bridge to all vehicles 24 hours a day during this period.

We appreciate that these works may cause temporary noise and inconvenience to local residents for which we would like to apologise.

We urge all drivers to take additional care and observe traffic management and signage in place during the closure.
