About the scheme

Erosion protection measures are planned at Hoe Mill Bridge which carries The Causeway over the River Chelmer in Woodham Walter, south of Ulting.

A full time road closure will be necessary to protect the public and the workforce as heavy machinery and equipment will be in use and manoeuvred on the highway.

Works are due to start at the end of the school summer holiday to minimise the impact on visitors vesting Hoe Mill Lock.

The works

Works began on 27 August 2019 to carry out essential erosion protection works. The programme has been impacted by bad weather and unexpected structural defects have been identified during these works, which has highlighted the need for repairs to the supporting columns and east abutment.

A full road closure is in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week during which time no vehicles will be permitted to cross Hoe Mill Bridge for safety reasons.

The structure currently has a 3 tonne weight restriction in place. In order to minimise further deterioration to the bridge, consideration is currently being given to implement a temporary physical width restriction at the bridge for a period of 18 months. This temporary restriction will enforce the current weight limit and prevent vehicles from parking on the bridge until long term improvements are made.

The road closure has been provisionally extended to May 2020.

Erosion protection activities will include some initial tree removal to provide site access, re-profiling the riverbed, and minor concrete repairs to the structure. Minor embankment works are also planned.
