Safer, Greener, Healthier Basildon

Some new interim, signed 20mph speed limits on roads in busy shopping areas of Wickford and Billericay are being put in place starting from Monday 22 June.

In Billericay a 20mph zone will extend along the B1007 High St, from its junction with Sun Street/A129 London Road, northwards to its junction with Norsey Road/Western Road.

In Wickford, a 20mph zone will extend along High St, from its junction with A129 London Road, northwards to its junction with Wickford Station access road.

The new lower speed limits aim to encourage people to support their local businesses by increasing pedestrian and cyclist confidence when having to avoid other people, particularly where traffic is passing.

Phase 2

Basildon (Wickford)

The scheme is the first part of a long-term plan to create an improved cycle link between Wickford and Basildon, which will eventually enhance the whole cycle and walking network across Basildon Borough.

This first section of route involves a series of improvements through residential areas from Nevendon Road in the South of the town to Wickford town centre and its railway station.

The proposals involve an improved cycling and walking corridor and include:

• Junction improvements and crossing improvements to improve walking and cycling.
• A proposed trial of a Low Traffic Neighbourhood. These are designated residential areas benefitting from 20mph zones and complimentary measures such as extended footways and other traffic calming measures, which improve streets and make it easier to walk and cycle.
• A ‘School Streets approach’, which make the streets surrounding school pedestrian and cycle only at the start and finish of each school day.
• The route is also along a bus route, and will improve access to bus stops, and therefore generally improving bus operations in the town.
